Interview Process: Module 6 Assignment

Throughout this interview process, I have received lots of positive feedback.  My Course Major Project focuses on young children who are experiencing speech-language disorders and how it affects their social, academic, and emotional development.   I received very valuable information from one of the interviewees, a certified speech pathologist; she provided valuable resources that enlightened my knowledge on techniques used in speech sessions. One key idea that I connected with was presented by the retired teacher, which is that all children must experience healthy and nurturing environments in order to establish confidence about any situation they may face.   My Course Project is developing through continuous research and interviews about this challenge that some young children face.  Hopefully, my research will make a difference in someones life.

  1. Hi Jessica it sounds as if your project is coming alone fine. Being a teacher in early education I can tell you that speech effect many areas of development for children. I had many children in my classroom that had speech therapist and the therapist gave me several suggestions that I could try at school. The problem I faced was getting parents to understand what the therapist and I were doing to help their child. How would you present your findings to parents who are not very interested in understanding the importance of speech and language development?

  2. Hi Jessica,
Great post! You wrote, “One key idea that I connected with was presented by the retired teacher, which is that all children must experience healthy and nurturing environments in order to establish confidence about any situation they may face.” How would you as an early childhood professional, provide a healthy and nurturing environment to those children who experience speech-language barriers? Did you have a difficult time scheduling with your interviewees? What specific strategies did you learn from the interview process? Did you complete all of your annotated bibliographies? How far along are you on the Course Project?

  3. I have worked with many children during my career that experience speech problems and my experiences with them have been all over the board. Some children are so paralyzed by their speech issues that they will not speak unless it is with someone that makes them feel safe. Other children are not even aware that they have speech problems and never meet a stranger. When working with these children, I try to remember to overlook the speech problems and hear what the child is trying to tell me. Helping them communicate effectively is so important to their self-esteem. Good luck with your project.

  4. Hi Jessica,
I worked as a certified Teacher of the Deaf when I we lived in Arizona where I taught speech and language therapy. Children at our school wore hearing aids or had cochlear implants. As a teacher, we taught speech and language throughout the day. This was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my career! Children have an innate desire to communicate their thoughts and express themselves. When you watch a child find their voice or have the ability to share what they did over the weekend, it is an enormous feat!

In your research, you are contributing to continual advances in services for children who need specialized services in speech and language. What a fascinating topic! I look forward to hearing more about it.
